Introduction
Promotion is a vertical
movement of an employee within the organization. In others words, Promotion
refers to the upward development of a worker starting with one occupation then
onto the next higher one with pay raise, status, and obligations. Promotion may
be temporary or permanent depending on the needs of the organization. The
promotion has an in-built motivational value as it elevates the authority,
power, and status of an employee within an organization. Employees are enticed and
motivated by promotions, which often minimize feelings of stagnation and
dissatisfaction.
Types
of Promotion
Promotion given to the
employee in an organization can be classified into three types:
1.Horizontal Promotion:
When an employee shifted in the same category it is called horizontal
promotion. A junior clerk promoted to the senior clerk is such an example.
2.Vertical Promotion:
This is kind of a promotion when an employee is promoted from a lower category to
a higher category involving an increase in salary, status, authority, and
responsibility.
3.Dry Promotion: When a promotion is made without a salary increase it is called dry promotion. Such promotion is made either there is a resource fund crunch in the organization or some employees hanker more for status or authority than money.

of Promotion
To recognize an
employees’ skill and knowledge to improve organizational effectiveness.
To develop a competitive
spirit in the employees.
To reward and motivate
employees to higher productivity.
To promote employees’
satisfaction and boost their morale.
To build loyalty among
the employees.
To retain skilled and
talented people.
To attract trained,
competent and hardworking people.
To impress the other
employees that opportunities are available to them too if they also perform
well.
Conclusion
Promotion is an advancement of an employee from one job level to higher one involving increased salary, status, and responsibility. Promotion is affected to recognize competent employees, boost morale, build loyalty, retain talented employees and encourage employees to perform well.
